14 iconic English bands and singers

What better day to celebrate our top pick of English singers and bands than St. George's Day! We may be a tiny country, but we have proudly given the world some of the best selling songs EVER! We caused Beatlemania, Harry Styles obsessions and Adele almost took over the word in 2011. So we may thank Japan for giving us karaoke, but they can thank us for these legendary English acts;

1. The Beatles

Just four young chaps from Liverpool. That's all they were. Making ladies faint across the globe. 55 years on, and McCartney's now laying down tracks with Rihanna and Kanye West.

2. Oasis

From Liverpool to Manchester. Even though the Gallagher brothers barely speak anymore, no one can resist sticking on Wonderwall when it comes to karaoke - even 20 years on!

3. The Spice Girls

They certainly spiced up our lives and went down in history as one of the world biggest ever girls groups. Even if Geri though that top could pass as a dress.

4. Blur

From Country Life to Charmless man, there's no mistaking Damon's East London accent (think Parklife verses...) - they're English through and through.

5. The Rolling Stones

Mick. Keith. Ronnie. Charlie. They may be a little wrinkly round the edges now, but they're still jamming in London's Hyde Park and keeping things as English as ever.

6. Adele

'Chasing Sidewalks' just wouldn't have worked, so thank god she's English.

7. The Smiths

Short lived - but they made a name for themselves in just 5 years. Then Morrisey politely excused himself as any good Englishman would do, and made a million all by himself. Bravo.

8. One Direction

Apart from the Irish one (Niall), and the one that left (Zayn) the other three are doing a decent job representing England to the younger generation. Shame they're not just a bit more popular.

9. David Bowie

Slightly eccentric, 100% English.

10. Sex Pistols

Polite young Englishmen, just in disguise.

11. Coldplay

A few students at University College London got chatting one day. Not sure whether they graduated, but it probably doesn't matter anymore.

12. Queen

Known and loved across the globe. Guaranteed to feature in any karaoke session worth remembering.

13. Take That

Not only did they sing it, but they did actually Rule The World for a bit. Luckily it's all about their music not their outfits.

14. Elton John

Made in England.

So if you’re using St. George's Day as an excuse for a party today, sing all these extraordinary English artists tonight in one very well organised English order.
