White Christmas

This is the song we always play on repeat whilst wistfully looking outside hoping for snow to arrive. Granted, with the Southern Rail strikes and London's tube problems recently, we're better off indoors whether it's a White Christmas or not!

This song originally debuted in the film Holiday Inn, where Bing Crosby is seen singing this whilst catching a tan in sunny California. What you might not know is that the original first verse was cut from the re-release of this single as the producer didn't think it'd make sense outside of the film. Famous covers of this includes Elvis Presley's and Lady Gaga's version. Which one do you prefer?

Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree

Does this song instantly remind you of Home Alone? The songwriter, Johnny Marks, penned this as well as Holly Jolly Christmas and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. The man sure knows how to write a Christmas hit! Brenda Lee was only 13 when she recorded this track in 1958 and it's been a classic ever since.

Famous covers of Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree include Cyndi Lauper and Kelly Clarkson.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer

The name Rudolph would've been scrapped if the songwriter Robert L. May decided to name the reindeer Rollo or Reginald as he had originally planned to! This Christmas favourite was based on May's childhood of being bullied by his classmates for being the tiny one of the group. Little did they know that this Christmas song would still be sung 77 years later!

Jingle Bells

We're all used to hearing the sleigh bells ringing in the song but there's actually a peculiar cover of this released by The Singing Dogs. Created by Danish ballad singer Don Charles, he features four of his wagging tailed doggy pals barking out the tune. I mean, if you're a dog lover - that's going to go down a treat.

Winter Wonderland

Though the lyrics don't directly mention anything about Christmas, it's the spirit of the song that makes this a popular choice for the holidays. We may picture Winter Wonderland in our mind but the story behind this song is anything but happy. Richard Smith penned this in 1930s of what he imagines he'd be doing had he not been suffering from a severe case of tuberculosis. After completing the poem, he passed it on to his friend Felix Bernard who then composed the familiar tune but sadly, Smith passed away before he could hear it come to fruition. Without his genius mind, Christmas lovers around the world wouldn't be able to escape to a Winter Wonderland at ease.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas

The original Christmas carol, We Wish You A Merry Christmas was first sung in the 1500s from the poor to the rich. If you listen carefully to the lyrics: 'now bring us a figgy pudding' and 'we won't leave until we get some' suddenly makes sense! The carol singers would refuse to leave from the doorsteps of the houses until food rations or money were given in exchange for the songs. The cheek of it!

Driving Home For Christmas

A song we all blast on the motorway driving back to our family homes. Sure, it starts off jolly but by the 10th time it's played and you've barely moved an inch from the road - it's soon met with a twitching brow and a scowl. This Christmas classic is perfect for those with a medium - low vocal range as you pretty much talk your way through the lyrics.
