When covers are better than the original

Ever since the Radio One live lounge was born, artists covering other artists' songs is now a ‘thing’. Rather than being frowned upon, it’s all about singers “making the tune their own” aka basically doing karaoke.  If you’re singing a cover of someone else’s released tune, we say it’s outright karaoke. The only difference is these popstars can sing a heck of a lot better than we can.

But what happens when the cover version is better than the original? How awkward. Nobody wants to admit that someone else can do their work better than they can. Especially when that other person is also famous in the same industry. Pistols at dawn anyone?

Here’s our firm picks in which the cover is better than the original.

1. James Arthur - Impossible

2. Mariah Carey - Without You

3. Walk Off The Earth - I Knew You Were Trouble

4. Pentatonix - Say Something

5. Adele - Promise This

6. Gary Jules - Mad World

7. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

8. Ben Howard - Call Me Maybe
